I am a big, big fan of Google Adsense. It is the most convenient way of serving a variety of contextual ads (i.e. ads about products that are in the subject area of your content) on the market and has millions of advertisers wanting you to show their ads. So why forget it?
The simple truth is that the cash you will raise as a Startup Blogger will be so small, it won’t be worth you giving up the estate on your page, particularly above the fold.
Adsense is about large numbers
If you want to make serious cash from Adsense, then you need to drive serious traffic to your blog. It’s about numbers.
Say, for every 1,000 page impressions, you get one click. That’s what’s called a Click-Through Ratio (CTR) of 0.01%, which is about average depending on your niche. Oh and lets say you get $0.50 per click, to be generous. So this means to earn $100.00, you need to drive 200,000 page impressions on your site. As a Startup Blogger, this is a dream. Just a dream. And what will 100 bucks buy you nowadays?
Adsense if for serious players who see page impressions in the MILLIONS per day. And heck it can be very profitable. Sure, smaller traffic volumes can still turn a buck or two but the point is, is it worth it? I think you should forget Adsense and consider using that space for something else.
What other purpose can that adspace be put to?
You could:
- Sell it direct or to a sponsor
- Place an affiliate product link/ad there
- Add a form so that readers can subscribe to your RSS Feed or Email List
- Leave it free for a less cluttered page
Still not convinced?
Good for you. Hang in there and try Adsense out and see how it works for you. I’m sure that this will be a big challenge for you, but you might be able to make it easier for yourself by trying these things:
- Improve your CTR by focusing on your niche and solving problems for readers by writing great content that is relevant. Make each page impressions be from someone who is right in the center of your target market.
- Drive more traffic to your blog by optimizing you blog for search engines.
- You could try the king of all Adsense gurus - Joel Comm - who wrote ‘Adsense Secrets 4‘. He can tell you exactly how to optimize your blogging for Adsense. I joined this list to receive his report and my Adsense revenues more than quadrupled within 2 months.
Forget Adsense…
Until you have at least 2,000 daily unique visitors. I think the adspace can be put to better use until then!
If you’re sure I am wrong about that, then squeeze every penny out of Adsense by joining Adsense Secrets 4 - Recurring Top 1% Commissions .
